#COFFINHOP2014 on ZOMBIEHOLICS: Changes in the Genre?

As authors, we’re immersed in the genre – I swear we eat, sleep, and think it for the most part. That said, I felt it would be interested to see if there’s anything the authors would change about the genre if they could. Here’s what they had to say.

Julianne Snow

If I had to change something, I would wish for there to be more diversity within the genre. I get that most zombie fans want the survival stories filled with characters they can identify with, but what about the themes and ideas that really and truly haven’t been explored? I guess that means it’s up to those of us who think outside the box to figure that out…

Stephen Kozeniewski

I wish there were more zombie TV shows where instead of fighting or, indeed, even encountering zombies, all the characters would just stand around having long, painfully forced “emotional” conversations about emotions that no sane person would be having under those circumstances and which the actors are far too mediocre to convey properly anyway.  No.  Wait.  Not that.  The opposite of that.

T.W. Piperbrook

I wouldn’t change a thing. I think the genre is thriving. This is a great time for zombie readers (and writers)!

Robert Chazz Chute

Avoid repetition. Reach higher.

Rhonda Parrish

Um. Nothing.

I tried really hard to come up with a clever answer to this, but honestly… I’ve got nothing. I love cheesy zombies, I love zombies as political/social commentary, I love gory zombies and funny zombies and fast zombies and slow zombies. I just kinda love zombies.

Armand Rosamilia

I wish more readers had an open mind when you change zombies up a bit. There’s too much arguing about fast vs. slow zombies or intelligent zombies… find what you like and read it, but be open to explore slightly different plot twists. You might even like it.

Jolie du Pre

There is nothing I would change about the genre.   When authors and screenwriters and directors try to get too original with the zombie genre, the result is never a scary result.  I want the tried and true.

#COFFINHOP2014 on ZOMBIEHOLICS: The Zombie Definition…

What better question to ask those who write about Zombies… What does the word ‘zombie’ mean to you?

Julianne Snow

A zombie to me could take on different forms – from something reanimated that was once dead to people suffering from extreme consumerism to the effects felt from the symbiotic relationship with a space parasite. Essentially, when you’re a zombie you’re focused on thing only; spreading your infection.

Stephen Kozeniewski

Papaya juice.  Some people think what’s important is the brands of rum you use, but those people are wrong.  The key to a good zombie is papaya juice.  I know, I know, that sounds exotic, and, sure, it’s a little hard to find, especially on the mainland, but once you’ve had one, I swear you’ll never go back to just pineapple juice and lime again.

T.W. Piperbrook

A human being stripped of their emotion and humanity.

Robert Chazz Chute

Much like a robot programmed to feed and replicate. I know a lot of zombies. They’re mostly trapped in offices.

Rhonda Parrish

While I know not all zombies are undead or able to spread their affliction, the zombies in my book are mindless, undead human-shaped creatures whose bite or scratch will not only kill their victim, but turn them into a zombie once they die.

Armand Rosamilia

I could give you some philosophical answer or try to sound like I know what I’m talking about, but I’ll be honest… zombies are just cool. That’s it.

Jolie du Pre

A zombie is a reanimated creature that feeds on human flesh.

#COFFINHOP2014 on ZOMBIEHOLICS: The Books!

So after asking the authors to describe their books in 10 words or less, let’s take a little bit of time to get to know them better… Meet the Books!

Glimpses of the Undead by Julianne Snow

Glimpses_FrontCover copyFrom the mind of Julianne Snow comes an undead collection of stories that feature the gamut of emotions and situations. Presented in flash fiction and short stories, the tales are sure to leave you wanting more and checking over your shoulder.

How would a group of children handle an uprising of the undead? What would you do to save a loved one only to find out that you’re facing a different threat altogether? How would a country react to a timely warning at the end of a war? What happens when a vampiric Romeo hits on an unsuspecting human? In a world where the undead are common place and protected, what happens when speed dating produces a love match?

The Ghoul Archipelago by Stephen Kozeniewski

The_Ghoul_Archipelago_ebook_coverAfter ravenous corpses topple society and consume most of the world’s population, freighter captain Henk Martigan is shocked to receive a distress call. Eighty survivors beg him to whisk them away to the relative safety of the South Pacific. Martigan wants to help, but to rescue anyone he must first pass through the nightmare backwater of the Curien island chain.

A power struggle is brewing in the Curiens. On one side, a billionaire seeks to squeeze all the profit he can out of the apocalypse. Opposing him is the charismatic leader of a cargo cult. When a lunatic warlord berths an aircraft carrier off the coast and stakes his own claim on the islands, the stage is set for a bloody showdown.

To save the remnants of humanity (and himself), Captain Martigan must defeat all three of his ruthless new foes and brave the gruesome horrors of…THE GHOUL ARCHIPELAGO.

#COFFINHOP2014 ON ZOMBIEHOLICS: Introductions…

Welcome to the Coffin Hop on Zombieholics Anonymous! Over the next 8 days, I’ll be featuring the same 6 authors, plus myself as I ask one question per day. It’s something a little different, but I like being able to showcase how different we all really are. The first question was a challenge – literally. I asked the 6 of them to introduce themselves in 50 words or less. And I added a caveat to that – if they went over 50 words, I would cut them off (it’s the Coffin Hop after all…). You’ll just have to read to see if anyone couldn’t meet the challenge! Oh and there’s a great giveaway to be sure to read to the end!

Wednesday Meeting: Leaving People Behind…

Hello my name is Julianne and I’m a Zombieholic!

(There’s a pause as the rest of the Zombieholics chant “Welcome Julianne.”)

So I have been pondering this question for quite some time and I’d like to take a few moments and talk about it.

Could you leave someone you loved behind?

What if there were hordes of Zombies coming your way and it meant the survival of more than just yourself?

I get wanting to be loyal and protective where your family and friends are concerned, but what if they were a liability? What if they put the whole group at risk?

The action is a little extreme, but you get what I’m going for here…

I’d like to think that I would do what was best for the greater good. If it was the difference in many surviving over the one lost, I would have to part ways with the one. I’d take into consideration things like age and mental status of course, but it would come down to survival. And sometimes it’s us or them. Plus I just know I’d get saddled with dead weight in terms of their inability to comprehend what was going on around us and not understanding that it’s never far or fast enough.

But what would you do? Would you leave your loved ones behind?

Julianne’s Monday Meeting: I Got My Fix Last Night!!

Hello my name is Julianne and I’m a Zombieholic!

(There’s a pause as the rest of the Zombieholics chant “Welcome Julianne.”)

If you have AMC or managed to catch it online, we all got our fixes yesterday. Since it’s mid-season return, The Walking Dead has amped up the action and I’m beginning to find myself completely invested in the show again.

There have been many moments that disappointed me, but then they come back with an episode that blew me out of the water. This past episode was one of them. So in the interest of not spoiling it for any people who have yet to see it, I’d love to know your favourite parts of the episode! Heck, tell me your favourite parts of seasons past. Those of you who haven’t watched it can consider yourself warned to not read the comments!
